Utrecht University’s Studium Generale organizes lecture series on topics of general interest. In the series Pop Culture Matters they examine the role of popular culture in society. I was invited to give the kick-off lecture, about sex on screen. I discussed concerns over sexualization, approaches investigating media effects versus approaches focussing on processes of meaning making, and I problematized media literacy, which is often offered as a solution against sexualization. A longer summary of the lecture can be found here.
