Horse-crazy girls
The horse-crazy girl (‘paardenmeisje’ in Dutch) is a very recognisable identity amongst young girls in Western societies, yet this specific subculture hardly receives attention from researchers. Grnvld, a magazine about the countryside, did a feature article on these girls. They interviewed me extensively and discuss the sociological backgrounds of this youth culture that appears to resist the trends of time. Full colour PDF of the article here.
New publication: Coming to terms with sexualization
Not since the feminist pornography debates of the 1980s has there been such an outburst of discussion, research and publications about sexualized images of women and girls. The debate is now carried out by governments and other social actors, but to hail current attacks on sexualization as a belated victory for feminism is naive and problematic. Together with Liesbet van Zoonen, I wrote an article in which we contend that current sexualization policies involve academic analyses and political solutions which are cast in the discourse of liberal feminism and neoliberalism.

Big sisters grow old: girls’ magazine Fancy stops
The Dutch magazine market is seeing many new titles lately, which also means that titles that have been around for a while run the risk of loosing readership. Fancy was a girls’ magazine that has functioned as a big sister since 1995. The final issue will appear in November 2011. Newspaper Trouw interviewed me about the appeal of girls’ magazines and about why Fancy specifically had to suffer. The article [PDF] appeared on 12 August.
NRC hoofdredactie tendentieus, ongefundeerd en nodeloos kwetsend
In het hoofdredactioneel commentaar van 26 juli haalt NRC Handelsblad hard uit naar het internet. Beschreven wordt hoe een kunstenaar foto’s van twee jonge meisjes gebruikt in zijn expositie ‘Showroom Girls’. NRC stelt dat dit project “etaleert hoe klakkeloos mensen nog altijd omgaan met sociale media, hoe weinig ze zich bekommeren om hun privacy. (…) Het lijkt of niemand de brenger van het slechte nieuws wil zijn, bevreesd afgerekend te worden als old school-spelbreker die anderen hun gein niet gunt.” Met dit commentaar plaatst NRC zich in een lange traditie van technologievrees, volledig ongehinderd door enige kennis van zaken. NRC doet dat bovendien schaamteloos over de lichamen van wat zij zien als de meest kwetsbare mediagebruikers: jonge meisjes.

Ordinaire exploitatie van angst bij de NTR
Vorige week slaagde De Wereld Draait Door er weer in een rel zich te laten voltrekken in de studio. Programmamaakster Mildred Roethof werd door vier meisjes uit haar ‘documentaireserie’ Rauw & Puur beticht van valse voorwendselen. Roethof kon niet meer uitbrengen dan dat ze de discussie niet wilde aangaan. De uitzending was voor mij niet alleen interessant omdat ik ben gepromoveerd op meisjescultuur, maar ook omdat een van deze meisjes deelnam aan precies dat onderzoek. Ik zat acht maanden bij haar in groep 8 en volgde haar in de overgang naar de brugklas.

Het zijn net meisjes
Om het schooljaar af te sluiten, studeerden tien meisjes van de Gunningschool een dansje in op Buttons van The Pussycat Dolls. Net als in de videoclip van deze burleske meidengroep, waren de danspasjes geïnspireerd op striptease: benen werden geopend en gekruist, handen gleden over borsten. Een voorbeeld van seksualisering van de maatschappij? Negen van de tien van deze meisjes identificeerden zichzelf als Moslim. Nog steeds seksualisering of er is meer aan de hand?

Etnische registratie maakt Nederland onnederlandser
Hoewel er niets van terug te vinden is in het regeer- of gedoogakkoord, heeft ‘etnische registratie’ veel Nederlanders de stuipen op het lijf gejaagd. Het is moeilijk om over deze maatregel te praten zonder een vergelijking met de Tweede Wereldoorlog te maken. Zoals met alle Godwins, slaat discussie daardoor vrijwel direct dicht. Laten we nu eens uitgaan van wat Wilders zegt te willen, namelijk het Nederlandser maken van Nederland. Is een maatregel als etnische registratie daarin effectief?

Gamers zijn mensenschuwe, bleke jongens met pukkels, die geen seks of een sociaal leven hebben. Ze zijn of dik (vanwege de overdaad aan cola en pizza) of iel (vanwege het gebrek aan sport en seks) en ze zijn altijd nerdy. Dat is tenminste het stereotiepe beeld van de gamer. Communicatiewetenschapper Mirjam Vosmeer promoveerde op een groep gamers waar vrijwel niets over bekend is: vrouwen en meisjes.

Girls want to be normal
Geassocieerde pers (that supplies content for several local newspapers) interviewed me about my dissertation. The article (see sample) was featured in 14 newspapers, including De Gooi- en Eemlander and De Gelderlander. I focus on agency and choice.
Enforced ethnic identification
Folia, the weekly magazine from the University of Amsterdam, interviewed me for their ‘doctor’ feature. I emphasize how ethnic identification is enforced. The article appeared in issue 35, 13 June 2008. Here is a PDF of the article.
Good news is no news
Daily newspaper De Telegraaf (called right wing by some and the only Dutch tabloid by others) interviewed me about my dissertation. Had I concluded that sexualization was happening, I would have made front page. Instead, my conclusions that there is nothing wrong with contemporary girls landed me on the page ‘Vrouw’ (‘woman’). You can read the article [PDF], in which I talk mostly about normalcy.
Black and white schools
Local newspaper Het Parool spoke to me for three hours and published an elaborate interview about my PhD research. Several central topics are discussed, including the absence of horse crazy girls on my ‘black’ school and the differences between the elite in Amsterdams center and the disenfranchised in the outer neighbourhoods like the one where I did my observations. Tokio Hotel = non-threatening sexuality
Emo band Tokio Hotel played the Netherlands. Local newspaper Het Parool interviewed me [PDF] about their appeal to young girls. I argued that Tokio Hotel represents an non-threatening sexuality that allows young girls to fall in love with these boys.
