Today, I was an invited speaker at the 40th General Assembly of BETH (Bibliothèques Européennes de Théologie, an ecumenical association of the national theological library associations in Europe). In my presentation, I focused on my experiences with studying young Christians, particularly the challenges the digital age provides. The diversity of the qualitative data I collect presents problems for analysis, comparison and archiving. I outlined the advantages of working with software and discussed the limitations. Finally, I talked about some challenges I encounter in my work: the fleeting nature of the web (e.g. the impossibility of YouTube as an archive), the handicaps of analyzing images and the dissemination of academic work to a larger audience (i.e. blogging about science for a laymen yet internet savvy audience). The talk was well-received and was followed by a discussion with the audience about what librarians can mean for young researchers in the field of religion.
