Invited speaker on youth culture conference
The coming days I am in Turku, Finland to attend the 11th NYRIS symposium Global / Local Youth – New Civic Culture, Rights and Responsibilities. The conference looks at youth as a global and local construction. Young people make sense of their world in a context where local decisions have global consequences and the global issues influence the local.
I have been invited to be in a panel on girlhood studies. The panel addresses key concepts in girlhood studies, such as agency, power, feminism and empowerment. How are these concepts understood and used in feminist girlhood studies? How do they affect researcher’s view and interpretations? And how are they circulated in media? Further, the goal is a dialogue between academic girlhood studies and girl work. The panel is organised by the Finnish Network of Girlhood Studies. Depending on wifi availability, I will be tweeting insights from the conference under #nyris11.
